Marc Chagall has an exhibition at the Tate Liverpool from now til October, which looks at his time in Paris before the First World War, his Berlin visit and exhibition in 1914, and years in his native Russia around the time of the revolution in 1917; it will be the first major presentation of his work in this country for over 15 years.

Picasso said in the 1950s 'When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is.' He was influenced by the ideas of Cubism, Symbolism and Fauvism, and was both a Russian and French artist. He was nearly a hundred when he died in 1985, and had lived through one revolution and two world wars. His work reflects his experiences, his travels, and his homeland.
