Artists in and around the film business: Bill Gold and Charlie Cobbs

File:CasablancaPoster-Gold.jpgBill Gold has been a 'poster boy' for seventy years: as a 21 year old in Warner Brothers art department, he was asked to design a poster for Casablanca. The first draft was rejected as the studio felt it was too static; Gold stuck Bogart's hand in  front holding a gun and it was a success.(Daybees website currently has a gallery of previously unseen alternative designs for many famous film posters : http://daybees.com/iconic-movie-posters/) Can you spot which one ended up being used here:

Since then he has designed over two thousand  movie posters in every genre. His favourite director is Clint Eastwood, with whom he has worked for 30 years - he retired after completing the poster for Eastwood's 'Mystic River', only to be called back in 2011 for the director's 'J Edgar'.

Within the films there's another kind of artist at work: Charlie Cobb has recently painted many fake Turner paintings, quickly so as to mimic Turner's own spontaneity, for Mike Leigh's film about the British artist, which stars Timothy Spall. He has also painted Helen Mirren as the Queen,  and a room full of famous paintings for Danny Boyle's film 'Trance'. In this film, Goya's 'The Flying Witches' is stolen. He also worked in Boyle's creative team for the London Olympics Opening Ceremony.
